A calorie describes how much heat a food releases when burned in a laboratory. Your body is not a furnace — it is a controlled, staged conversion that only proceeds if every cofactor is present. Take away one B vitamin and the line stalls at a specific step. Take away magnesium and the finished energy molecule cannot even be used, because it only works while bound to it. This is why two people can eat the same meal and get very different amounts of usable energy out of it, and why 'eat less, move more' misses what is actually happening.

Food is broken down into simple units — sugars, fats, amino acids — and delivered to the cell.

Inside the cell, those units are processed into a common intermediate that the mitochondria can accept.

Inside the mitochondria, a cycle strips electrons from that intermediate onto carrier molecules.

The carriers deliver those electrons to the transport chain, which uses them to pump a gradient across a membrane.

That gradient is released through a turbine-like enzyme, producing ATP — the actual currency your cells spend.
