Transform — essential cofactor, via the molybdopterin cofactor, for xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase, enzymes involved in purine breakdown and metabolic clearance
Maintain — cofactor for sulfite oxidase, the enzyme that detoxifies sulfites generated from sulfur amino acid metabolism
Exchange — absorbed efficiently (roughly 40-100% depending on intake level) via a straightforward gut transport process, among the more efficiently absorbed trace minerals, though high dietary copper or sulfate intake can reduce its uptake
Maintain — also serves as cofactor for aldehyde oxidase, an enzyme involved in metabolizing certain drugs and aldehydes generated during normal cellular metabolism, broadening its detoxification-cofactor role beyond sulfite oxidase alone
Form matters
The same nutrient can be made in very different forms — and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside.
