How it works
Transform — cofactor for pyruvate carboxylase and other mitochondrial enzymes involved in gluconeogenesis and energy metabolism
Maintain — structural cofactor in manganese-superoxide dismutase (SOD2), the primary antioxidant enzyme inside the mitochondrial matrix
Build — required cofactor for glycosyltransferases that build cartilage and connective-tissue proteoglycans
Exchange — absorbed poorly (generally under 5% of dietary intake) via a transporter shared with iron (DMT1), so iron-deficient states can increase manganese absorption and iron supplementation can reduce it -- a real nutrient-nutrient competition at the point of gut uptake
Build — also a cofactor for arginase, the liver enzyme that completes the urea cycle, linking manganese status to ammonia clearance from protein metabolism in addition to its cartilage and mitochondrial roles
Form matters
The same nutrient can be made in very different forms — and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside. Without a COA, you are trusting a label, not the science.
