How it works
Build — the single most abundant amino acid in collagen, forming roughly every third residue of its triple-helix structure
Maintain — a required substrate (with cysteine and glutamate) for synthesis of glutathione, the body's main intracellular antioxidant
Regulate — acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter at glycine receptors in the spinal cord and brainstem, and evening glycine intake is studied for its association with subjective sleep quality and calmer nervous system tone
Exchange — the body synthesizes glycine endogenously from serine and other precursors, but demand from collagen synthesis alone is large enough that some researchers classify it as conditionally essential -- endogenous production may not fully keep pace with structural-protein demand in some circumstances
Form matters
The same nutrient can be made in very different forms — and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside.
